Meet Mr. Max , a cherished and beloved figure in the world of holiday entertainment, who has brought the magic of Santa Claus to life in the Philippines since the mid-1990s. With his jolly demeanor, authentic appearance, and heartwarming interactions, Max Newton embodies the spirit of Christmas and has become a favorite among children and adults alike.
Max Newton's journey as Santa began unexpectedly when he was approached by a talent agent while waiting in a bank in Makati. Initially agreeing to small TV and movie roles, he eventually donned the Santa suit at a mall during Christmas. The joy and happiness he witnessed in the eyes of children and adults alike convinced him to continue this festive role ever since, enjoying every minute of being “Santa Claus.”
Originally from Antwerp, Belgium, Max has lived in the Philippines for over 30 years. He brings a rich background as a designer and artist, having worked on Christmas cards for Hallmark in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, when he is not spreading holiday cheer, Max continues to paint oil on canvas and engage in artistic endeavors.
Max’s portrayal of Santa Claus is not just about wearing the suit; it's about embodying the character. Over the years, he transitioned from wearing a traditional costume to a high-quality, breathable Santa suit with a real beard. This dedication to authenticity has earned him the reputation of being a "real" Santa, with blue eyes and a naturally soft beard that children love to touch.

Despite the tropical climate, Max embraces the warmth as a small price to pay for the happiness he brings. His Santa suit, inspired by the Victorian Santa image, is made from natural materials that are comfortable yet historically resonant. Max's portrayal harks back to a time when Santa's attire varied in colors like purple, brown, green, and golden yellow, adapting these styles to suit the festive spirit.
Max is also a member of the Gentlemen in Red, a group of real-bearded Santas, and part of the company Living Santas. He has received numerous heartwarming reactions, with people often amazed by his authenticity and gentle presence. One memorable moment includes a child asking Santa to bring back his deceased mother, a request that left Max deeply touched.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Max's Santa activities, with events in 2020 being non-existent and only a partial recovery in 2021. Despite these challenges, Max remains hopeful for a revival of the Philippine Christmas traditions and spirit in the coming years.
